Are you a nutritionist or a dietician?
I am neither a nutritionist nor a dietician. What I am is a Holistic Health Consultant.
What's the difference?
In the field of Holistic Health, nourishment through food is only part of the equation - the focus is on much more than what you eat. A healthy person is a happy person, living a fulfilled life in their sense of self, their career, their relationships and in their exercise routine. So while edible nutrition might be a starting point, it is by no means the only avenue I tackle with my clients. You can eat perfectly, but if you hate your job, chances are, you're probably not the happiest -- and consequently not the healthiest -- person around.
The other main difference is that I don't prescribe - foods, diets, or anything else. Holistic Health is a team sport: I work together with my clients and recommend ways to achieve better overall health in a safe and supportive environment. I will not tell you what is "good" or "bad" but rather we will collaborate on creating the right plan for each individual.
So what do you do?
Most people know exactly what it is that they could be doing in order to feel their best. But many of us set impossible goals, and as a result, live in a perpetual cycle of "on the wagon" or "off the wagon":
- We go on a diet, lose those extra pounds and feel wonderful, only to gain it back again in the celebration of having achieved a more desirable weight.
- We would like to start exercising more, but there don't seem to be enough hours in the day.
- We have a list of foods that we would like to or have been told to incorporate or remove from our diet and we don't have a clue how to go about making those lasting changes.
That is where I come in: with bite-sized steps that are easy to incorporate into the day-to-day, I help clients make healthier choices and assist them in the transition to overall wellness.
The trick lies in translating challenging theory into simple practice through supported experimentation, through encouragement rather than judgment.
Each person is different and there is no one way of eating that works for everyone.During our sessions, we will explore food and lifestyle choices that best support YOU. I will also help you to make gradual, lifelong changes that enable you to reach your current and future health goals in a way that is flexible, fun and free of judgment.
Who do you work with?
On an individual level, I am focusing on Picky Foodies: people who are needing to overhaul, restrict or expand their diets for medical or personal reasons and are seeking help and support in figuring out how to successfully effect these changes.
Life doesn't have to end because you no longer eat bread!
Having been through this transition myself I can speak from first-hand knowledge and I love being able to use what I have learned to help others -- we are extremely lucky in that there are so many options available to us these days!
My other areas of interest are candida infections, food intolerances, emotional or compulsive eating and the challenges posed by the stresses of everyday life - especially on business travellers and people in the media.
Regardless of how busy you are, it is always possible to take care of yourself.
How does it work?
We start off with an hour-long health history evaluation, after which I offer different programs. For those interested in pursuing a deeper exploration into health and wellbeing, the six-month program would probably be most appropriate.
Others who would prefer to get their feet wet before diving in might be more inclined to try out the three-month program.
In addition, I offer specific sessions on various Picky Foodie topics:
(These sessions may or may not involve a hands-on cooking class)
- Sugar cravings
- Alternative protein sources
- Creative salads
- Sea Vegetables
- Raw Foods
- Raw chocolate
- Food for travel
I also lead supermarket tours and am available for kitchen/pantry (re)organising services.
How long are the sessions?
In both the three and six-month programs, our sessions are conducted twice a month.
Each session lasts around forty-five minutes.
Neither the initial consultation nor the programs themselves need to be conducted in person:I am available over the phone as well as on Skype. We don't even need to be in the same country!
Will you be making me give up my favourite foods?
Absolutely not!
I will not make you do anything you don't want to do. My work focuses on growing your repetoire of go-to healthy options, on empowerment not judgment - you probably get enough judgment in other parts of your life (including from your self), you don't need me for that!
If anything, I will probably ask you to ADD foods rather than remove them.
What are "Desert Island Foods"?
DIF are foods that you would take with you to the end of the earth. I always specify that logic has nothing to do with this question, so it isn't important whether there will be refrigeration or not - it's a fantasy.
Some people prefer to think about entire meals while others pinpoint specific ingredients. One person even mentioned an entire taste palate!
Are raisins bad?
Depends what you mean by "bad." For most people, they're probably less harmful than a cheeseburger, but seeing as they have a relatively high concentration of fruit sugars, if you're trying to get rid of a candida overgrowth they may not be the first food I would recommend.
